Prerequisite: “Mass Care Overview” Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance Tuesday, Nov. 17th: 8:30am – 5:00pm Basic Level Course Trains Red Cross caseworkers how to conduct effective client interviews and provide appropriate assistance to help meet a client's immediate disaster-caused or disaster-aggravated needs. Prerequisite: “Fulfilling Our Mission” Collaborating to Ensure Effective Service Delivery Monday, Nov. 16th and Tuesday, Nov. 17th: 8:30am – 5:00pm (both days) (This is a two-day class, attendance both days is mandatory) Basic Level Course The purpose of this course is to prepare Red Cross employees and volunteers to establish collaborative relationships that contribute to coordinated disaster response and help to ensure effective service delivery. Basic Level Course Defensive driving is a form of training for motor vehicle drivers that goes beyond mastery of the rules of the road and the basic mechanics of driving. Disaster Assessment Basics (New course!) Monday, Nov. 16th: 1:00pm – 5:00pm Basic Level Course The purpose of this course is to provide a general overview of the tasks performed by Red Cross Disaster Assessment workers in support of a disaster relief operation and a local incident such as a single or multi-family fire. Prerequisites: “Fulfilling Our Mission” Please Note: This course is not a replacement for the “Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment” course, which is still the required course for all DSHR members who wish to participate in the Disaster Assessment activity on a disaster relief operation. Disaster Frontline Supervisor Thursday, Nov. 19th: 8:30am – 12:00pm Basic Level Course This course provides disaster relief operations supervisors with tools that support their success and prepares them to lead a team of disaster workers to deliver high quality client service and to create a climate that promotes worker satisfaction. Prerequisite: Participants must have experience on previous American Red Cross disaster relief operations and the appropriate training in the activity in which the participant expects to become a supervisor. The course will prepare participants who will be assigned to government and emergency settings to work collaboratively with Red Cross partners, helping to ensure a coordinated response that results in effective service delivery. Financial and Statistical Information Management Thursday, Nov. 19th: 8:30am – 12:00pm Basic Level Course This course will prepare participants to perform the tasks of a Financial and Statistical Information Management (FSI) Service Associate on a Disaster Relief Operation. Participants in this course will be Red Cross employees and volunteers who are currently serving in the FSI activity. Others who may benefit from taking this course include those in Operations Management and those who may require an understanding of the operational procedures and tasks associated with Financial and Statistical Information Management, including Client Caseworkers. No prerequisites for this course Workshop for Development of Community Disaster Education Presenters Friday, Nov. 20th: 8:30am – 5:00pm Basic Level Course The purpose of the workshop is to prepare participants to plan for delivery of quality Community Disaster Education presentations by providing background information and support. The workshop provides information on ways to overcome disaster denial issues to motivate individual and family disaster preparedness actions. It does not teach platform presentation skills; rather, it focuses on how to choose appropriate messages for target audiences and selecting materials that convey those messages. No prerequisites for this course. However; a commitment to deliver quality Community Disaster Education presentations to the public, and experience in public speaking are preferred. • Please note: Any courses in which an online component is listed as a prerequisite requires that an online class be taken through the National Red Cross’ Learning Management System (LMS). Online Courses Did you know that in addition to our Disaster Services classroom trainings, we also offer online classes? The American Red Cross currently offers several different Disaster Services online training classes through our Learning Management System (LMS) that are free of charge and can be taken at any time from any computer with internet access. The American Red Cross uses the Learning Management System as its primary learning center for Disaster classes. Students may access online courses, create a development plan, and view their learning history. All classes tracked through LMS are recorded in the student's LMS record automatically upon completion. Online courses offered Basic Food Safety The purpose of this training is to provide an overview of the safe food handling principles used in support of a disaster relief operation. Participants will be volunteers and employees of the Red Cross and other agencies who may serve or handle food on a disaster relief operation. Prerequisite: “Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion Into Community Action”. Length: The course is comprised of four segments, and takes approximately one hour to complete. Please Note: This is a contracted course from an outside Red Cross Vendor and is available in both English and Spanish. No registration is required prior to taking this course. You may take this course by following these steps: 1. Go to http://arc.safefoodsolutions.com 2. The activation code is: RedCross. Type in the activation code when prompted, (Please note: the activation code is space & case sensitive), and click the "Submit" button. 3. Read the instructions under "Is this your first time here?" Client Assistance Cards: Caseworkers This course introduces caseworkers to the role of issuing Client Assistance Cards by interviewing clients, filling out the proper forms and activating Client Assistance Cards via phone. Client Assistance Cards: Financial and Statistical Information Management Workers The course leads Financial and Statistical Information Management (FSI) workers through the Caseworker’s role of issuing Client Assistance Cards by interviewing clients, filling out the proper forms and activating Client Assistance Cards via phone. It then addresses how FSI workers distribute, control and track cards on both a disaster relief operation and during a local response. Prerequisite: “Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance” Length: This online course is comprised of four modules with a total estimated time of three hours to complete the entire course. Disaster Public Affairs Overview The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the role Public Affairs plays in disaster relief, as well as guidelines for Red Cross employees and volunteers working in any activity to use when responding to a media inquiry. Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites for this course, however it is recommended that participants have taken “Fulfilling Our Mission” prior to taking this course. Length: This online course is comprised of six modules, and takes approximately one hour to complete. Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment is a blended learning course consisting of two components, online and instructor-led. Successful completion of both course components is required to receive a certificate of course completion. The online training component of the course (Part 1) provides an overview of the Disaster Assessment activity and its related tasks. The instructor-led component of the course (Part 2) will reinforce and build upon content presented in the online component while providing participants with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and develop skills in Disaster Assessment through applied learning activities. Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites for this course, however it is strongly recommended that participants have taken “Fulfilling Our Mission” prior to taking this course. Please note: The completion of the online component is a required prerequisite for the instructor-led component. Length: The online component is comprised of six learning modules. Introduction to Disaster Services Introduces participants to American Red Cross Disaster Services and allows them to discover how volunteers support this critical mission and to explore the ways they can become involved in a local chapter. Preparing for and Managing a Spontaneous Volunteer Workforce Provides participants with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare for and manage volunteers with no previous Red Cross affiliation who come forward to work with the Red Cross when a disaster threatens or occurs. Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course, however it is recommended that participants have taken “Fulfilling Our Mission” and “Fundamentals of Staff Services” prior to taking this course. Length: This online course is comprised of four modules, and takes 45 minutes to complete. Serving People with Disabilities Following a Disaster Serving People with Disabilities Following a Disaster is a blended learning course consisting of two components, online and instructor-led. The online component provides general information for any American Red Cross employee or volunteer who serves the public following a disaster. Additional classroom instruction, including a tabletop exercise, provides detailed training for disaster workers who are in direct and constant contact with people with disabilities. This instructor-led portion allows learners to practice skills obtained from the online portion of the course.
